Switching Costs

The money, time, learning and adjustment involved in moving from one product, service or provider to another.

Simple example

When a café changes coffee suppliers, it tests samples, adjusts machine settings and trains staff to use the new product. All of these are switching costs.

Why does it matter?

They show that having an alternative does not necessarily make switching easy. This matters when assessing both supplier and customer relationships.
