Threat of Substitute Products or Services

The competitive pressure on an existing solution when customers can meet the same underlying need with a different product or service.

Simple example

Someone who wants a morning coffee could make it at home and bring it in a flask instead of buying it from a café.

Why does it matter?

It helps businesses understand how customers meet their needs. Another café is a direct competitor, while making coffee at home can be a substitute.
